Resilient Communities
According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), resilience is the "ability of a system, community or society exposed to hazards to resist, absorb, accommodate, adapt to, transform and recover from the effects of a hazard in a timely and efficient manner, including through the preservation and restoration of its essential basic structures and functions through risk management."
The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030) outlines the priorities of UN countries toward achievement of resilience through integrated approach of reducing the risk in countries towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These targets "aim to protect peoples’ lives and livelihoods, and to prevent losses resulting from disasters."
