Orientation and Preference Bias
In 2016, the United Nations Human Rights Council took a big step forward by passing a resolution Protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity." This important decision means the UN will be officially appointmenting an independent expert on the subject. This is a major victory for the rights of people who face discrimination and violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Human rights groups praised this resolution as a significant improvement, building on similar decisions made by the Council in 2011 and 2014.
The Philippines abstained from participating in voting for this historic win and development on gender and human rights.
